This early 17 jewel Ball was made and marked on the dial and movement for Marcy & Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. Marcy & Company were jewelers and railroad watch inspectors, and were early distributors for Ball. Indianapolis, sometimes known as "The Crossroads of America" was a pretty big railroad town, and a junction of "The Big Four". Marcy & Company were just one of many private labelers of fine watches in town (See the "Marcy Special" Hamilton in this section) I don't really know when Ball stopped marking watches with the names of their distributors, but all that I have seen or heard of are very early examples. These watches are very hard to find and prized by collectors almost on a level with the "Brotherhood Balls". By the way, I guess this qualifies as a "private label - private label". A big thank you to the kind collector who has allowed me to photograph this extremely rare and pristine private label from his collection. |
