This 18 size Rockford was made for Sears & Roebuck. The Plymouth Watch Co. private label was one of many used by Sears. Most of the Plymouths were made by Illinois, and were medium grade, but for some reason, Sears had 2 Plymouth watches contracted from Rockford. These were the above 21 jewel grade 845 Hunter and a similar open face version, both called "King Edward". These were much higher grade watches than the other Plymouths. It is possible that R.W. Sears, who was a noted tough negotiator, contracted these Rockfords to use as leverage with Illinois. This hunter is very hard to find as only 650 of the entire grade was manufactured. Most of this grade was listed as "Special" in the serial number list, so all of the grade may have been private labels and most or all may have been, as above, for Sears. A big thank you to the kind collector who has allowed me to photograph this hard to find and pristine private label from his collection. |
