The “King of the Road”, made for Wilson Brothers, Boston Mass is a famous private label. Wilson Brothers owned a large jewelry and watch company. This watch is odd, in that it is a 16 jewel, and even more odd, in that it is so marked. This is a grade 65-S, which was widely used as a private label because it was almost a Bunn in quality, but it was much less expensive. At the time it was made, this watch was “railroad grade”. In all, 200 16 jewel hunters were made in this grade. At least some of these were also marked “Illinois Railroad King”. A big thank you to the kind collector who has allowed me to photograph this hard to find, and pristine private label from his collection. |
