This month's interstatetime "Watch of the Month" was submitted by Mike Nardick of Allegheny Chapter 37 of the NAWCC. Mike knew that this private label, 21 jewel 18 size Illinois Bunn Special was a watch that would tickle the fancy of the "Watch of the Month" committee. The watch is marked "Wm. G. Earle Philadelphia, Pa. on both the dial and movement. One look at the high grade "gothic" glass enamel dial, the damascening and finish of the regulator parts and the rest of the movement, should tell the practiced observer that this is a "Bunn Special" grade watch. This private label is listed in the book Railroad Watches, Identification and Price Guide By Bill Meggers and Roy Ehrhardt. I have not done the research yet, but Mr. Earle was undoubtedly a jeweler and railroad watch inspector in Philadelphia. Private label watches of this quality are relatively hard to come by, because it was much cheaper for a jeweler to put his name on a lower quality watch. We must thank Mr. Earle for having the taste to have contracted and sold such a high quality watch, and to Mike Nardick for finding it and submitting it as "Watch of the Month". |
