Illinois Watch Company - Springfield, Illinois 18 size Bunn Special 21 & 23 Jewel "EXTRA"Movements After a well deserved one month vacation, the Interstatetime Watch of the Month is back, and back with a bang! November's watches are 2 rare Bunn Special varieties. The 21 jewel Bunn Special on the left above, is from 1904. It is one of the brightest and hardest to photograph watches I have ever seen. I think it must have come with a label that warned against looking directly at the movement for fear of damage to the eyes. The photo above does not do it justice as I had to make a compromise between being able to see the lettering and getting the full effect of the 2 tone damascening. In my opinion, this movement variety is the ultimate example of the art of "2-tone" as practiced by Illinois, and perhaps by any company. There are 2 known varieties of 21 jewel Bunn Special marked "EXTRA" and speculation is that there may have been 200 or fewer of this variety produced. The 23 jewel Bunn Special on the right above, is a different story. It was made around 1913. Although it is a "blazer" of a movement, it looks like many other 23 jewel Bunns except for the addition of the word "EXTRA" on the barrel bridge in the same place as it is marked on its 21 jewel sister. This watch is a much rarer watch. I have been told that at least one other example marked like this exists, but I have not seen it, and can not confirm it. If you have, or have seen another like it, I would appreciate it if you would e-mail me with the serial number. Thanks go out to my good friend Jerry Barko, who was kind enough to submit, and let me photograph these beautiful watches. If you have a watch you would like to submit, or any questions.... |
