ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH CO., ELGIN, ILLINOIS 16 Size, Grade 161, 17 jewels, Open Face w/Custom Odd Fellows Dial There has been a lot of discussion on the Internet watch scene lately, regarding fancy dials. It is for this reason that the December 2001 Watch of the Month is almost more dial than watch. I say "almost", because the movement is pretty cool too, but relatively unrecognized by the majority of collectors. According to factory advertisements, this dial could be ordered from the factory, for a 16 size watch, at an additional cost to the jeweler of between $2.25 and $3.00. Similar dials have also been seen in 18 size. From the fact that so few are seen today, we may conclude that Elgin must have done a poor job of marketing these fancy dials, and or not many people were willing to pay for this upgrade at the time. At any rate, I think it would be fair to say that most of us would gladly pay at least $3.00 to own one now! This beautiful movement is from the first of 4 runs of 1000 of this grade. It is somewhat a mystery as to why Elgin manufactured such a high grade, low jewel watch as this. Some have said that these were manufactured for Sears & Roebuck. Whatever the reason, and even though this movement may be surpassed in beauty by its dial, it is certainly one great looking American watch movement! Thanks to interstatetime.com friend, and Elgin aficionado , Joe Jones for letting me take pictures of this rare and interesting watch. We are proud to make it the December 2001 watch of the month. If you have an interestingl American pocket watch you would like to submit as Interstatetime Watch of the Month..... I would love one of the early American boys to submit a watch for the first WOTM of 2002 hint hint! |
