Interstatetime Watch of the Month February 2002

18 Size, 23 jewels, Hunter, Model 947 "Extra"

This has got to be the "holy grail" of Hamilton collecting, and it is undoubtedly the rarest of all production grade Hamiltons. Only 308 of the grade 947 were made and only a few were marked "Extra". The best guess among collectors is that between 5 - 10 of these watches exist today.

The grade 947 was an up-jeweled version of the 21 jewel grade 943. All but one of this grade is listed as grade 943 in the serial number list. 947s and 943s were prestige watches and were finished about as well as any any American watch, so it is hard to imagine what was done to this watch to make it "Extra". It is gorgeous in every detail. You will notice that a mirror like finish has been given to the round area around the jewel setting on the balance cock (this has turned almost black in my scan). Every piece of this movement which could be polished is polished to the extreme degree. Please note also, that this movement is "Fully Marked", meaning that the barrel plate is marked "Motor Barrel, Double Roller, Adjusted 5 Positions, 23 Jewels, 947 and Extra". What more could you ask?
