AMERICAN WATCH COMPANY (WALTHAM)

This is one of less than twenty "Key Wind 20 size" American grade watches made as Presidential presentation pieces for sea rescues. This piece was presented to Captain B. A. Oberg for the rescue of the crew of the American Steamer "Mississippi" in 1862, when Abraham Lincoln was the President. As you can see, the watch is in beautiful original condition and represents a wonderful piece of American history in so many ways.

Aside from the obvious historical significance of the Lincoln presentation, the watch itself is quite significant. 20 size American grade Walthams are scarce enough, but this particular watch is one of only a few that was assembled from material acquired by the American Watch Company (Waltham) when it purchased the Nashua Watch Co. of Nashua NH. This is confirmed both by the Waltham serial number (50,063) on the movement, and by the Nashua assembly number (173) visible under the dial. The marriage of Nashua and Waltham was a seminal point in the history of American watch manufacturing. For Waltham, with its financial and production resources, this purchase meant it was able to acquire not only significant patents and intellectual property from Nashua, but also some key personnel. Nashua influence can be seen in the best of the Waltham production for the rest of the company's storied history.

Thanks to interstatetime.com friend and National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Chapter 149 member Peter Stammler for taking these beautiful pictures of his wonderful and historical watch. We are proud to make it the February 2006 watch of the month.
