Every month we will pick a watch, submitted by one of our viewers, to be "Watch of the Month". "Watch of the Month" submissions should be a vintage or antique American pocket watch. They don't have to be rare or expensive, just interesting (this should give you lots of options). If you have a watch you would like to submit CLICK HERE to go to the "submission rules" page. THESE WATCHES ARE NOT FOR SALE!

The Interstate Time site is all about collecting and collections. It is therefore natural that this month's "Watch of the Month" is not just a watch but a collection. This group of Columbus King hunters is what collecting is all about. It is about a quest to have all of a group of watches, and there is one watch yet to be collected here: the 17 jewel version....but who knows....it could turn up any time!

The Columbus Watch Company was started by one of the most famous names in American watch making, Dietrich Gruen. Gruen started a company called the Columbus Watch Company in 1874. Until 1883 most if not all of the movements were manufactured in Switzerland. Around 1883 they produced their first watches in Columbus.

In 1894 the company went into receivership and Fredrick Gruen split off and started the D. Gruen & Son Company, based in Cincinnati. A reorganized Columbus Watch Company produced watches from 1894-1903, which included named grades such as the above "Kings". In 1903 the Studebaker family of South Bend, Indiana purchased the assets of the company and reorganized it as the South Bend Watch Company.

This beautiful collection of watches was submitted by my good friend Jerry Barko. I thank Jerry for his good taste, and his generosity for letting us all see some of his prizes.
