Jacob D. Custer, Norristown, Pennsylvania Aprox. 14 size, Open Face, Lever Fusee, Serial Number 7 In keeping with our theme of the last few months we are featuring another early American watch as Watch of the Month this month. This would certainly qualify as one of the earliest watches made in the United States of America. Jacob Custer had little if any formal training as a watchmaker. He learned most, if not all he knew by fixing watches for people in the community of Norristown. Between the years of 1840 and 1845, he made around 12 watches. He made all the parts himself except, perhaps for the fusee chains and maybe the hairsprings. He is also famous for the clocks he made in his shop. There are 2 known examples of Custer watches that survive today, this one, and SN-2, which is in the Smithsonian. This is the only one which still has its original Custer made case. It is all original. We all need to thank Mid-America featured speaker, and top watch collector/researcher Jon Hanson for making photos of his extremely rare and beautiful Jacob Custer watch available to the viewers of the Watch of the Month. Please come see the display of never before seen watches, like this one, at our display, and hear speakers like Mr. Hanson at the Mid-America Regional in Fort Wayne, Indiana, October 18-19, 2002. If you have a watch you would like to submit, or any questions.... |
